This section of the website features background about the vision and values initiative, including information on how the vision and value statements were developed. |
Brief history of the Vision and Values Initiative
The Alberta Public Service vision and value statements were introduced in June 2006. Their introduction followed consultations where employees were invited to provide input into a shared vision that reflects what the public service is striving to achieve and common values that public service employees believe are important to demonstrate as they work toward achieving the vision.
A brief summary of activities that were undertaken to develop the renewed vision and values is below:
October 2005
Deputy Ministers and human resource directors from across government met to discuss possible themes that could be incorporated into renewed vision and value statements.
December 2005
Those sitting on ministry executive committees met to further discuss vision and values and confirmed possible themes for vision and value statements.
Executive committee members agreed on the importance of making sure all employees had the chance to be involved in developing renewed vision and values to guide the public service.
February 2006
Small group discussions with employees to receive input on the proposed themes were held in several communities across the province.
April 2006
The vision and value themes were refined based on feedback from the small group discussions. All provincial government employees were invited to share their thoughts on these themes through a survey.
May 2006
Wording for the vision and value statements was drafted based on the survey results. The statements were reviewed, refined, and approved by the deputy minister steering committee guiding the vision and values renewal initiative.
June 2006
The renewed vision and value statements were officially unveiled during a meeting of Government of Alberta Executive Committees on June 2.
June and July 2006
A series of staff events were held in seven locations across the province to introduce the renewed vision and value statements to all public service employees.
